Personal Project Blog Post

The scope of this project was to create a package for Raven Service Club and for the Wilson family highlighting what Noah's bandaid drive is and how ONW students can participate. Our process in creating this video was first creating the idea. Next we contacted raven service club and the Wilson family for more information. We sat down with Scott Wilson, the father of Noah Wilson, and got an interview with him to explain the project and give detail on Noah's legacy. Scott also provided us with a google drive full of pictures and videos of Noah to use as our b-roll. We also sat down with Sarah, a neighbor and a raven service club member, who gave us more specific info on the way ONW students can help.

During this video we learned how to handle interviewing and talking to a more sensitive subject. We learned new communication skills for future interviews. We a;so learned technically how to add a graphic into the lower thirds of the video to play throughout the whole video. I also collaborated with Libbie for this whole video.

In this video I would probably do the interview differently and try to make the quality of the interview better. I would keep the sound bytes and the b- roll the same. I think we did well with getting relevant answers from both Scott and Sarah. The experience I will make from this is gaining new communication skills and learning how to handle a sensitive subject. Overall I think this is one of our best packages. We told a story and we informed.

Technical Tutorial Post- Rule of Thirds

I will be teaching the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is a basic rule in video shooting. You'll use this with almost every video you shoot especially in journalism when your shooting an interview. The rule of thirds basically outlines four key points that you want your subject to line up on. The grid looks like a tic tac toe board and you want your subject to be at one of the four crossing points on the grid.

The purpose of this rule is so that your subject is never centered in the camera and it gives a more interesting view. We need this skill because it adds to the overall composition of a package. For news packages your intense audience is the people. This skill is useful in a news package during the interview.

Below I will write steps on how to achieve the rule of thirds:

1. Set up your camera on the subject.
2. Start by having your subject in the middle of the grid for reference.
3. Shift the camera to where the subject is now lined up on one of the grid points.
4. Subject should look like they are on the side of the screen at almost and angle.
5. Start shooting.
6. You're done.

Professional Article Blog Post

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/08/us/politics/political-divide-on-campuses-hardens-after-trumps-victory.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fus&action=click&contentCollection=us&region=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=sectionfront&_r=0

This article is about students on campus at the University of Michigan who support Trump that feel like they need a safe space somewhere on campus. They feel this way because class were cancelled the day after Trump's win just for students who felt they couldn't focus. The author talked to multiple students on campus who gave their feelings and stance on the matter.

I think the article and author did well with interviewing multiple students who supported Trump and supported the idea of the safe spaces. They got a good amount of info to back up this view. A weakness in my opinion would be that the author did not get any interviews or insight from students on the opposing side. This could be an issue with writing totally fair and well balanced article. The author concludes that there is hope for safe space on campus but the university is worried that the media will take hold of the story and re bring out an uproar.

The author does support the main points presented. I think the author could have done better at making the article into more of a clear argument rather than telling a story. Overall I think the article was well written and it is definitely attention grabbing regarding the fact that it is surrounding politics in a very heated time.

The scope of this package is to inform the public that protesters remain on Standing Rock even through freezing temperatures and blizzard conditions. This package is entitled, "Protesters Endure Blizzard to Remain At Standing Rock." The package was produced by NBC News. This package included a variety of shots all falling under the 6 shot system. They also utilized crucial nat noise throughout the video to show just how windy the location was. The package included three different interviews all with a lower thirds including the subjects name and a brief description.

The story told was that passionate protesters were willing to endure hazardous weather conditions just to make their point. The story was told through the interviews of the people. There were no voice overs, instead there were captions on screen throughout the video. An element from this video that I would apply to my own work is the multiple interviews used. I try my best to get at least two interviews but three would be a good goal for me. An element that I have already learned that was applied in the project is the lower thirds technique. In class we use lower thirds with the subjects name and description in all our packages.

The creator did well with getting good sound bytes from the people he interviewed and by getting relevant nat noise that helped with the effect of the blizzard. The creator could have improved by recording actual voice overs instead of just captioning over the shots. In conclusion I think the package was well made and had some good elements but could improve. Props to the person filming who was in the blizzard with the protestors.
